ASK MABS-What Strange Brake Noises Really Mean

Hello Mabs

Lately, I’ve noticed a strange noise coming from my car’s brakes. What could be causing it, and how can I figure out if it’s something serious?

Mabs Answers:

A strange noise from your brakes is never something to ignore, and I would also be concerned. I reached out to my mechanic friends, and this is what they had to say:
The noise could be a result of worn brake pads. Our stop-start traffic means brakes wear out quicker than we realise. Sometimes, it’s just dust or grit caught between the pad and the disc, which can also cause a squeak. But if you hear a grinding or metal-on-metal sound, that’s a red flag that the pads may be finished and could damage the discs. The safest bet is to pop into a trusted mechanic or brake
specialist as soon as possible. Think of brakes as your car’s best insurance – it’s always worth checking early rather than waiting too long.
