In a world where SUVs dominate the roads and new models arrive thick and fast, it’s easy to feel unmoved. That was my first reaction to the GWM Haval H7, a mid-sized family SUV that looked more brute than beautiful. But as with many things in life, first impressions can be misleading. It wasn’t the styling that won me over, but the drive itself. Paired with a scenic escape to Cradle Moon Lakeside Lodge, this road trip turned into a story of unexpected charm, comfort, and capability, both from the vehicle and the destination.

First impressions
First impressions of the Haval H7 brought back memories of old-school SUVs built for adventure. With its bold stance and boxy frame, it looks ready to tackle gravel, mud and the wild outdoors, perfect for weekend warriors chasing thrills. As someone who prefers tarred comfort to bundu-bashing, I wasn’t convinced this was my kind of ride. But step inside, and the H7 surprises.
It’s a generously sized and well-finished five-seater, not the seven-seater I initially expected. Designed to challenge the likes of the VW Tiguan, Kia Sportage and Toyota RAV4, it feels more substantial on the road, both in size and presence. That extra bit of intimidation might just give it an edge in this crowded segment.

First drive
My very first drive in the Haval H7 was to Pretoria, and it felt like I was stepping into the future, with loads of comfort. Offered in Luxury and Super Luxury trims (the latter reserved for 4WD and hybrid models), the H7 comes loaded with features that rival premium contenders.
The 14.6-inch infotainment screen and 12.3-inch digital cluster are slick and intuitive, complemented by a panoramic sunroof, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and heated seats. Safety is no afterthought either, with six airbags and a full suite of semi-autonomous driver aids. As a Gen X driver, I appreciated how easy it was to get connected and settled in. The blend of touchscreen controls and tactile buttons struck the perfect balance—tech-forward without alienating those who still like a good old button to press.

Xploring Cradle Moon Lakeside Lodge
With the Haval H7 proving itself on city roads, I figured it deserved one last outing before handing back the keys. Enter Cradle Moon Lakeside Lodge—a place I had long side-eyed thanks to TikTok reels and Instagram stories from Joburgers in the know. Nestled just 31km from my home, this 1500-hectare retreat offers a fusion of adventure, tranquillity and understated luxury. Known for its scenic trails, wildlife sightings and occasional film shoots, it felt like a world away while still being right on the edge of the city.

I skipped the 6am hike (with zero regret) and instead eased into the day at the on-site restaurant. Coffee in hand, I soaked up the vibe—colourful regulars swapping trail stories, fitness junkies cooling off and the odd celebrity spotting among the crowds that come and go. There’s a sense of effortless connection here, where nature and creature comforts co-exist beautifully. The H7 fit right in – stylish, capable, and just the right amount of rugged.
As I drove back home from Cradle Moon, the late afternoon, I knew I would return with my entire tribe. I couldn’t help but reflect on how well the Haval H7 complemented the whole experience. It handled the winding backroads with composure and gave me the space, comfort and tech I didn’t know I needed. Much like Cradle Moon itself, I found the H7 to be about balance. It brings together power and practicality, simplicity and sophistication. It’s not just an adventure vehicle, but a true partner for those everyday escapes that recharge the soul without straying too far from home.
