Stellantis Unveils Exciting Plans for South Africa at Media Connect

By Aurelia Mbokazi

Stellantis SA is an exciting player in the motoring industry, boasting a diverse portfolio of nine brands that cater to different markets and driving needs. At their recent Media Connect event at Monte Casino, Fourways, Stellantis SA introduced several brand-specific future plans, with a focus on innovation and growth in South Africa. Mike Whitfield, Stellantis SA CEO and industry veteran, shared the company’s optimistic outlook, announcing plans for a R3bn assembly plant in the Coega Special Economic Zone in Gqeberha, where they will produce the Peugeot Landtrek bakkie by 2027.

Whitfield also revealed that Stellantis will be expanding its focus to include micro-mobility solutions, with a commitment to both electric and conventional two-, three-, and four-wheelers. But the real excitement came when the spotlight shifted to the individual brands under Stellantis, and it was clear that each brand had something special lined up.

Citroën
As Stellantis’ entry-level brand, Citroën is already offering the C3 Aircross, a stylish and affordable SUV priced below R400 000. But things are about to get even better, as they prepare to launch the Hola, a panel van designed with South African entrepreneurs in mind. Set to be priced at around R250 000, this stylish addition will fill the gap in the half-ton bakkie market, combining functionality with the sleek design Citroën is known for.

Alfa Romeo
Alfa Romeo fans have reason to get excited, as the brand is gearing up for the launch of the Junior, a crossover that will feature an electric option. Additionally, the popular Tonale will be available as a plug-in hybrid. For those who still prefer the roar of an internal combustion engine, the Giulia sedan and Stelvio SUV will continue to deliver the performance and style the brand is renowned for.

Jeep
The Jeep brand continues to make waves, particularly with the Wrangler, which received a hero’s welcome during its epic Cape Coast launch earlier this year. Now, it will have a new sibling in the form of the Gladiator, a rugged, go-anywhere bakkie designed and built right here in South Africa. The Gladiator promises to take on whatever adventure you throw at it.

Leap Motor
Stellantis also unveiled Leap Motor, a Chinese electric brand that is set to lead the evolution of electric vehicles in South Africa. With its sleek, imposing SUV, Leap Motor made a powerful statement, ushering in the future of EVs in South Africa.

Opel
The highlight of the event was the launch of the new Opel Grandland, a refined and sportier SUV perfect for those seeking space and German precision. Retailing at R789 000, the Grandland comes packed with features, including a 10-inch digital instrument cluster, a redesigned steering wheel, and a stylish new drive selector. Opel’s Pixel Box, a clever storage compartment that houses USB-C ports and a wireless charging pad, adds a touch of futuristic tech, making the Grandland not just a car, but a lifestyle choice.

With cutting-edge tech, bold design, and spacious comfort, it’s more than just an SUV, it’s a lifestyle upgrade.
