VW GOLF 8.5: A Celebration of a Legacy

By Mabuyane Mabuza

Volkswagen Golf is no stranger to many, myself included. So when the invite to the launch of the new Golf 8.5 came through, I didn’t hesitate. After all, the Golf’s legendary status speaks for itself.

One look at the new Golf and it’s clear how the modern lineage flows, from the Golf 6 right through to this latest model. The Golf 8.5 proudly carries the “less is more” DNA that has made the Golf such an icon.

First Impressions
The Golf’s enduring appeal lies in its winning combination of quality, performance and standout design. The eighth-generation model continues this legacy, firmly positioning the Golf as a cornerstone of the Volkswagen line-up in South Africa. When it first launched here in 2021, the much-loved and efficient 1.4 TSI engine was noticeably absent. But with the arrival of the updated model, VWSA confirms the 1.4 TSI is officially back, marking the return of an icon.

From design to performance, the Golf 8.5 brings back everything we love—including the 1.4 TSI.

The Golf simplicity
For years, the Golf was deeply woven into South African pop culture. Volkswagen recently unveiled the Golf 8.5 in South Africa, a model that not only continues the celebrated legacy of the Golf brand but also embraces modernity with a bold design and cutting-edge technology. For many South Africans, the Golf is more than just a car.

It’s a cultural icon, packed with memories, laughter-filled road trips, and woven into the everyday rhythm of life. But in recent times, its siblings, the Polo and Polo Vivo, have taken the spotlight. Still strong contenders in the hatchback segment, these younger models may now overshadow the Golf, whose more “mature” appeal could work against it.

More than a car, it’s a cultural icon. The Golf returns with style and soul.

The Iconic Golf Brand
Since arriving in South Africa in 1978, the Volkswagen Golf has earned a special place in the hearts of local motorists. Known for its reliability, practicality, and sheer driving pleasure, the Golf has become more than just a car, it is a part of South
African life.

For many, it holds memories of family holidays, spontaneous road trips, and daily commutes, each journey adding to its story. To true Golf fans, it was never just a vehicle, but a trusted companion on life’s winding roads.

For South Africans, the Golf isn’t just a car—it’s part of the family.

As the country has grown and changed, so too has its bond with the Golf. From the
streets of Johannesburg to the avenues of Cape Town, early models quickly became favourites among young professionals and families alike.

Thanks to its comfort, performance, and all-around versatility, the Golf remains a beloved presence in South African communities today.

Generations later, the Golf still holds its place in South African hearts and driveways.

Design and Technology
The latest Golf 8.5 introduces a fresh design language – modern, bold, and still
distinctly Golf. With sharper lines and a sportier stance, it looks ready to hit the road
with purpose.

LED lighting, including the striking light strip across the front grille, gives it a futuristic edge while still nodding to its heritage. Step inside, and the innovation continues.

Volkswagen has embraced a clean, minimal interior centred around a fully digital cockpit. Everything feels intuitive, from the sleek touchscreen interfaces to voice control and smart connectivity options. It’s designed to keep drivers connected and in control, without distraction.

Despite all the tech upgrades, the Golf 8.5 remains as practical as ever. Boot space is generous, proving that smart design doesn’t have to come at the cost of everyday usability.

Minimalist inside, maximum control. The Golf 8.5 puts smart design at your fingertips.

Driving Experience
Staying true to Volkswagen’s tradition of compact engines that pack a punch, the Golf 8.5 is powered by the ever-reliable 1.4 TSI. It offers an impressive balance of performance and efficiency, making it just as capable on the weekday commute as it is on a weekend escape.

Weekday commutes or weekend escapes—the Golf 8.5’s 1.4 TSI does it all.

The updated chassis and suspension setup bring a refined, comfortable ride, whether you’re weaving through Gauteng’s back roads or gliding along the highway. During the launch, our route took us from Kempton Park, through scenic back routes toward Mpumalanga, before heading to Pretoria East for a laid-back lunch at a nature reserve. The Golf handled every leg of the trip with ease and poise.

One of the highlights of the Golf 8.5 is its adaptive driving modes. Whether you’re in
the mood for a dynamic, sporty drive or a calm, fuel-efficient cruise, the Golf adjusts
seamlessly to suit your style. Add in the suite of advanced safety tech, and you’ve
got a car that not only performs but also keeps you feeling confident and secure
behind the wheel.

Verdict
I couldn’t help but wonder—are South Africans still as Golf-crazy as they once were?
While there are no doubt still loyal Golf fans out there, the general market seems to
have moved on. The Golf may no longer enjoy the same warm reception it once did,
not because it’s lost its charm, but because the market has changed.

This isn’t a reflection of the car’s quality—far from it. The Golf 8.5 remains a
wholesome, well-rounded drive that delivers on all fronts. But the playing field has shifted, especially with the growing popularity of Chinese brands offering competitive features at lower prices. It’s a tougher crowd out there for long-standing nameplates.
